Calculations for 'L' Shaped Rooms or Areas

Split an irregular shape or L-shaped room into two distinct rectangular sections. Calculate the square footage of each section separately using Length × Width, then add the two results together.

Example Calculation

Section A is 10 ft by 5 ft (50 sq ft). Section B is 6 ft by 4 ft (24 sq ft). The total is 74 square feet.

Calculating Square Footage for Walls

Calculating Cost Per Square Foot

Divide the total project cost by the total square footage. For example, a $1,000 project covering 200 sq ft costs $5 per square foot.

Measure the length and width of each room that needs flooring. Multiply length × width for each room, add all areas together, then add 5–15% for waste. Enter your measurements here and use the Material Waste Factor field to include extra automatically.
Add 5–10% for straight-lay patterns (planks or standard tiles). Add 10–15% for diagonal, herringbone, or chevron patterns. Add 15–20% for complex patterns or rooms with many corners and obstacles. Enter the percentage in the Waste Factor field.

Measure to the wall edge, not the baseboard. Flooring goes under the baseboard trim. If baseboards are already installed and can't be removed, measure to the baseboard edge and add about ¼ inch per side.
Divide the L-shape into two rectangles. Measure and calculate each rectangle's area separately, then add them together. For example: Rectangle 1 = 10 × 12 = 120 sq ft, Rectangle 2 = 8 × 6 = 48 sq ft. Total = 168 sq ft.
