Bathroom Square Footage Calculator — Tile, Renovation, and Remodel Estimates
Bathrooms are the most tile-intensive rooms in any home. A single full bathroom remodel requires tile measurements for the floor, shower walls, shower floor, tub surround, and sometimes the entire perimeter wall as a wainscot. Each surface has a different area and different waste percentage. Getting the square footage of each surface right before you order tile prevents the most common (and expensive) remodeling mistake: running out of a discontinued tile mid-job.
This calculator handles the floor rectangle for the bathroom itself. For wall and shower tile estimates, use our wall calculator and tile calculator in combination. Enter your bathroom's length and width to get the floor area in square feet and square metres — then apply the tile waste percentage for your chosen pattern.
Bathroom Size Categories
Bathroom sizes follow a predictable hierarchy based on fixture count and configuration. Knowing which category your bathroom falls into helps you benchmark renovation costs and material quantities before you start getting quotes.
- Powder room / half bath (toilet + sink only): 18–35 sq ft; typical 5'×7' = 35 sq ft
- Three-quarter bath (toilet + sink + shower): 35–55 sq ft; typical 5'×8' = 40 sq ft
- Full bath (toilet + sink + tub/shower combo): 40–80 sq ft; typical 5'×9' = 45 sq ft
- Master bath with separate tub and shower: 80–150 sq ft
- Luxury master bath: 150–300+ sq ft
Tile Coverage for Bathroom Floors
Bathroom floor tile is measured in square feet, but grout joints and cutting waste add material requirements beyond the raw floor area. For 12"×12" tiles set square, add 10% for waste. For 12"×24" rectangular tiles set in a brick pattern, add 12%. For any diagonal layout, add 15%.
Shower and Tub Surround Tile Calculations
Shower wall tiles require measuring each wall panel separately. A standard 36"×36" shower with 8 ft walls has three walls: 3 ft × 8 ft = 24 sq ft each, totalling 72 sq ft of wall tile, plus a 3'×3' = 9 sq ft floor. Add 15% waste for shower floors due to slope cuts and drain area. For a standard alcove tub surround (5 ft wide × 4.5 ft high on three sides), the total tiled area is approximately 67 sq ft.
Heated floor tile requires the same square footage calculation as unheated tile, but you additionally need to measure the heated mat coverage area, which excludes the footprint under vanities and toilet bases. The heated area is typically 60–75% of the total floor area in a standard bathroom.
