Bathroom Square Footage Calculator: Tile, Renovation, and Remodel Estimates
Bathrooms use more tile per square foot than almost any other room. A full remodel can need tile for the floor, shower walls, shower floor, tub surround, and sometimes a wainscot around the perimeter. Each surface has its own area and waste rate. Get each surface right before you order, or you risk the most expensive mistake in bathroom work: running out of a discontinued tile halfway through.
This calculator handles the bathroom floor rectangle. For wall and shower tile, combine it with our wall calculator and tile calculator. Enter length and width for floor area in square feet and square metres, then add the tile waste percentage for your pattern.
Bathroom Size Categories
Bathroom sizes follow fixture count and layout. Knowing your category helps you benchmark renovation costs and material quantities before you collect quotes.
- Powder room / half bath (toilet + sink only): 18-35 sq ft; typical 5'×7' = 35 sq ft
- Three-quarter bath (toilet + sink + shower): 35-55 sq ft; typical 5'×8' = 40 sq ft
- Full bath (toilet + sink + tub/shower combo): 40-80 sq ft; typical 5'×9' = 45 sq ft
- Master bath with separate tub and shower: 80-150 sq ft
- Luxury master bath: 150-300+ sq ft
Tile Coverage for Bathroom Floors
Bathroom floor tile is ordered in square feet, but grout joints and cut waste push the order above raw floor area. For 12"×12" tiles set square, add 10% waste. For 12"×24" tiles in a brick pattern, add 12%. For any diagonal layout, add 15%.
Shower and Tub Surround Tile Calculations
Shower wall tile is measured wall by wall. A standard 36"×36" shower with 8 ft walls has three walls at 3 ft × 8 ft = 24 sq ft each, for 72 sq ft of wall tile, plus a 3'×3' = 9 sq ft floor. Add 15% waste on shower floors for slope cuts and the drain area. A standard alcove tub surround (5 ft wide × 4.5 ft high on three sides) totals about 67 sq ft of tile.
Heated floor tile uses the same square footage math as unheated tile. You also need the heated mat coverage area, which skips space under vanities and toilet bases. Heated area is typically 60-75% of total floor area in a standard bathroom.
