Inches Square Footage Calculator — Convert Square Inches to Square Feet
When dimensions are measured in inches — tile sizes, small room layouts, furniture footprints, countertop sections, window openings, and vent covers — you need to convert square inches to square feet before comparing to material coverage rates, which are almost always specified per square foot. The conversion is simple but frequently skipped: divide square inches by 144 to get square feet. This calculator accepts inch dimensions directly and returns the area in both square inches and square feet.
Common situations requiring inch-to-squarefoot conversion: checking whether a 36"×36" shower floor tile order matches your supplier's square-foot pricing, calculating the coverage of a 6"×6" backsplash tile, measuring furniture footprints against room area, and ordering replacement vent registers priced by the opening size in inches.
Square Inches to Square Feet Conversion
Because 1 foot = 12 inches, 1 square foot = 12 × 12 = 144 square inches. To convert:
- Square inches ÷ 144 = square feet
- Square feet × 144 = square inches
Examples of common inch-measurement areas:
- 12"×12" tile: 144 sq in = 1 sq ft exactly — easy reference unit
- 6"×6" tile: 36 sq in = 0.25 sq ft (need 4 tiles per sq ft)
- 4"×4" tile: 16 sq in = 0.111 sq ft (need 9 tiles per sq ft)
- 18"×18" tile: 324 sq in = 2.25 sq ft (≈ 0.44 tiles per sq ft)
- 24"×24" tile: 576 sq in = 4 sq ft (0.25 tiles per sq ft)
- 36"×36" shower floor area: 1,296 sq in = 9 sq ft
Tiles Per Square Foot Reference
When tile sizes are in inches, the number of tiles needed per square foot is: 144 ÷ (tile width in inches × tile height in inches).
- 3"×6" subway tile: 144/(3×6) = 8 tiles per sq ft
- 4"×12" subway tile: 144/(4×12) = 3 tiles per sq ft
- 6"×6": 4 tiles per sq ft
- 12"×12": 1 tile per sq ft
- 18"×18": 0.44 tiles per sq ft (order 2.27 tiles per sq ft)
- 24"×48": 0.125 tiles per sq ft (order 8 sq ft per tile)
Furniture and Appliance Footprints in Inches
Appliance specifications always give dimensions in inches. A standard refrigerator footprint of 30" wide × 30" deep = 900 sq in = 6.25 sq ft. A 36"×36" range = 1,296 sq in = 9 sq ft. A dishwasher 24"×24" = 576 sq in = 4 sq ft. When planning kitchen flooring that will be laid before appliances are installed, include these footprints in your total floor area order even though the appliances cover them — flooring goes underneath.

Ordering Tile by Square Inch vs. Square Foot
Some specialty tile suppliers, particularly for handmade ceramic and imported stone, price tile by the square inch or by the piece. When a tile is priced per piece and the tile dimensions are 4.25"×4.25", the coverage per tile is 18.0625 sq in = 0.1254 sq ft. Divide your total floor square footage by 0.1254 to get the tile piece count. Add 15% for waste. For 85 sq ft of floor at 0.1254 sq ft/tile: 85 / 0.1254 = 678 tiles. Plus 15% waste: 780 tiles. Compare the per-piece price times 780 against the per-square-foot price to find the better deal. Always confirm the unit of sale before ordering — a $0.89 per-piece price on a 4.25"×4.25" tile equals $7.10 per square foot, which is higher than many stock tile options.
