Tile Square Footage Calculator: Grout, Layout, and Coverage Planning

Tile orders need tighter math than most flooring jobs. Tile ships in fixed units. Grout joint width changes how many tiles fit per square foot. Pattern choice drives waste. And if you run out mid-job, the same color from a new batch may not match. The workflow: calculate area, pick tile size and grout width, figure tiles per square foot, add pattern waste, then round up to full boxes.

Grout Joint Width Effect on Tile Count

Grout joints add spacing between tiles, which slightly lowers tile count per square foot compared to a pure tile-size calculation. Cut edges at room boundaries can waste grout line alignment. For ordering:

  • 1/16" grout joint: negligible effect; use pure tile area calculation
  • 1/8" grout joint: adds ~1% to effective spacing; negligible on small jobs
  • 3/16" grout joint: reduces tile count by ~1.5%; matters on very large orders
  • 1/4" grout joint (brick/rustic): reduces tile count by ~2% but needs more grout

Tile Layout Patterns and Waste Factors

  • Straight/grid (0°): 10% waste; tiles align with room walls
  • Brick/running bond offset (33% or 50%): 10% waste; one direction stays straight, cuts stay efficient
  • Diagonal (45°): 15% waste; perimeter tiles need diagonal cuts
  • Herringbone: 15-20% waste; two orientations, many short cuts
  • Basketweave: 15% waste; more complex, but tiles stay at 90°
  • Versailles pattern (4 sizes): 20% waste; order each size separately; one size cannot substitute for another
  • Chevron: 20% waste; angle cuts at both ends of every plank

Calculating Grout Quantity

Grout quantity depends on tile size, grout joint width, and tile thickness. The formula: Pounds of grout = Area (sq ft) × joint width (inches) × tile thickness (inches) × 144 × grout density factor / (tile length + joint width) × (tile width + joint width). In practice, use manufacturer coverage tables on the grout packaging. They list bags needed per 100 sq ft at various tile sizes and joint widths. For a 12"×12" tile with 3/16" joints, typical coverage is 40-60 sq ft per 10 lb bag of unsanded grout.

Tile Box Coverage and Ordering

Tile boxes list coverage in square feet. Divide total order area (with waste) by box coverage to get box count. Always round up. Buy all tiles from the same production batch (lot number). Even the same SKU from a different batch can vary in color or size enough to show in the finished floor. Check lot numbers on delivery and set aside mismatched boxes before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Measure the tiled area (length × width) and add 10 to 15% for cuts and breakage. On walls, use width × height and subtract windows and doors. Enter measurements with the waste factor you need.
Get total area in square feet including waste, then divide by one tile's area. Example: 100 sq ft with 12×12 in tiles (1 sq ft each) needs 100 tiles. With 6×6 in tiles (0.25 sq ft each) you need 400.
Use 10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal, and 15 to 20% for herringbone, chevron, or mosaic. Add more when fixtures, corners, or odd walls mean extra cuts.
Do floor (length × width) and each wall (width × height) separately. Subtract openings on walls. Add all areas, then apply your waste factor. The calculator handles the arithmetic.
Tile adhesive often covers 40 to 60 sq ft per bag. Grout depends on tile size and joint width; one bag might cover 40 to 100 sq ft. Figure tile area first, then follow the manufacturer chart on the bag.
