Mastering the rectangle area formula — length multiplied by width — and knowing how to apply it correctly for material ordering is the foundation of nearly every home improvement estimate.

Rectangle Area Formula

The rectangle area formula is: Area = Length × Width. Both measurements must be in the same unit before multiplying. If length is in feet and width is in inches, convert one before calculating. Twelve inches equals one foot — divide inch measurements by 12. The result is in square feet when both inputs are in feet, square metres when both are in metres, and so on.

For partial feet: convert feet and inches to a decimal before multiplying. A room measuring 14 ft 6 in has a decimal length of 14.5 ft. A wall measuring 9 ft 3 in is 9.25 ft. Multiplying decimals produces the correct square footage without intermediate rounding errors that accumulate when you round each dimension first.

Rectangle Border / Frame Area

A rectangle border is the area between two concentric rectangles — think a picture frame, a border tile pattern around a room, a pool surround, or the lawn area around a building footprint. The formula is: Border Area = (Outer Length × Outer Width) − (Inner Length × Inner Width).

Example: A 20 ft × 30 ft patio surrounds a 12 ft × 22 ft pool. The patio (border) area is (20×30) − (12×22) = 600 − 264 = 336 sq ft. That is the area of concrete or pavers needed, not the full rectangle.

Rectangle vs. Square: Key Differences in Application

A square is a special rectangle where length equals width. For a square room or space, the area formula is the same (s × s = s²), but material waste patterns differ. Square rooms allow tile to be centred perfectly on all walls simultaneously. Rectangular rooms often require a decision: centre on the long wall (leaving cut tiles on short walls) or centre on the short wall (leaving larger offcuts on the long walls). Square rooms with large-format tile (24"×24" or larger) produce the most aesthetically balanced layout. For rectangular rooms, mark the centreline of the room along its longest axis before laying the first tile to achieve a balanced appearance at both ends.

Use a tape measure or laser distance meter. Measure the length along the longest wall and the width along the shorter wall. Measure at floor level, as walls may not be perfectly straight. Take measurements in at least two spots and use the average.
Measure both pairs of opposite walls and use the average for each dimension. For example, if one wall is 12.1 ft and the opposite is 11.9 ft, use 12 ft. This gives a more accurate area estimate for rooms that aren't perfectly rectangular.
